I’m a little bit late to the game with this one but it took me some time to get this site up and running and reflect on what I did in 2020. Not to mention, the last couple of weeks were fairly busy!
Travel looked a little different in 2020 and we kept it a little more local. That doesn’t mean that we didn’t make the most of it and have lots of adventures. Here is what we got up too during the pandemic:
We Explored The BC Wine Country

Did you know that Canada has several wine regions? I’m sure you have all heard of the Niagara wine region but B.C. also has it’s very own.
Located approximately 4 hours from Vancouver is the Okanagan. The Okanagan consists of several towns that are known for their local & small batch wine. We set up a home base in the city of Penticton where we enjoyed the wineries and bistros of the Naramata Bench & Corkscrew drive. We only had a few days so we made sure to make the most of it.
Here are our go to wineries:
8th Generation
Silkscarf
MOCOJO
Therapy
Howling Bluff
Serendipity

Spent A Weekend At A Ski Resort

After a crazy year we booked a little get away Sunpeaks Ski Resort in Kamloops BC. We went during the summer so it was less busy and was mostly filled with mountain bikers. There were tones of local restaurants and trails and the village was extremely dog friendly.
We had a little bit of excitement when we were evacuated during a fire alarm one morning.
We were able to relax and unwind and enjoy the view, food and wine. It was a much needed vacation during a crazy year.

Spent Time on the Local Trails

In 2020, we hiked a total of 61.08 km’s. Not too shabby as a majority of the trails were closed during the lockdowns. We always look for the less busy trails so social distancing was easy. We looked for lesser known trails and planned to start in the morning so we missed the crowds.
Our favorite Trails of 2020 were:
Hunter’s Trail
Sawblade Falls
Lower Lynn Valley Loop
Munro Lake
Looked for a trail? Vancouver Trails offers detailed descriptions of the trails with information on where the trail head begins, how long it is, the difficulty level and the region the hike is located.

We Took Short Road Trips

For part of the year, BC residents were asked to stay in their communities. To break the monotony of staying home and being unable to travel, we would pack up the dogs and drive. We weren’t able to get out of the car but we could pretend we were on a road trip. We went to:
A hot spring
The site of a famous landslide
A ocean side community
Learned to Cook Dishes from Around the World

We weren’t able to go to as many places as we wanted too and for a portion of the year, we were asked to stay within our own communities making even staycations and local travel a little challenging. Whenever we book a trip, we research local dishes from that destination and learn to cook them. It’s our way of getting excited and ready to immerse ourselves in that culture.
In 2020, we decided to think about places that we want to revisit or travel too and get inspired by cooking a local dish.
Our culinary experiences took us too:
North Africa (shakshuka)
Italy (burst tomato and rosemary fettucini)
South Korea (bulgogi jeongol)
Vietnam (Bahn Mi)
France (Beef Wellington)
It was definitely different than in years past but we kept ourselves sane by reminiscing on our travels and keeping it local.

In 2020, we had to get creative and so we chose to explore our own province. Let me know in the comments some of your best travel experiences of 2020.
